The \u2018Archivio-Mediateca delle Terre\u2019<\/strong> is the multimedia archive of the Crocevia International Centre. It comprises a collection of nearly 2,000 audiovisual recordings<\/strong>, photographs, slides, teaching aids, CDs and CD-ROMs, available to anyone interested in exploring the themes of international solidarity, agroecology and human rights.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This collection has been built up over decades of cooperation projects with countries in the Global South. As part of its solidarity work, Crocevia has also carried out communication projects<\/strong>, with the aim of providing communities with new means to express their own perspectives, thereby reclaiming the right to self-representation<\/strong>, bypassing the filter of the Western gaze. For this reason, the contents of the Archive and Media Library are all the more rare and exclusive.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Since 26 November 2021, the Archive has been based in Rome, at the Casa del Parco delle Energie, 175 Via Prenestina.<\/strong> Here, we now find files and audiovisual materials, housed within the premises of the \u2018Maria Baccante\u2019 Territorial Documentation Centre<\/strong>. Together with the Parco delle Energie Forum<\/strong> \u2013 a network of citizens\u2019 committees that has taken the protection of this urban park, threatened by property speculation, to heart and secured its preservation \u2013 Crocevia and the Media Library have established a permanent partnership to promote awareness-raising and counter-information initiatives.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Thanks to a project funded by the PNRR<\/strong>, since 2023 we have been working on reorganising the Archive and creating a digital catalogue<\/strong> to make its contents searchable by students, researchers, activists and other users. In this regard, an agreement is already in place with La Sapienza University of Rome, which has offered to facilitate collaborations with students and lecturers for seminar and text research activities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Building on the archive materials, we also aim to independently develop cultural initiatives such as exhibitions, seminars, film screenings and conferences. Finally, the archive and media library premises will be enhanced by a multimedia exhibition created using holographic projection technology<\/strong>, which will deliver a themed visual experience with the support of video editors and technical experts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

How the Mediateca delle Terre came into being<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

The idea of creating this archive arose in the late 1970s in the wake of the MacBride Report, which highlighted misinformation and all the inequalities in communication between countries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Mediateca aimed to offer an alternative to the media model of the time, which distorted reality or presented only a partial picture of it \u2013 particularly in developing countries \u2013 and which, as a result, did not allow everyone the necessary space to express themselves.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

All this came about thanks to a group of people working at the Crocevia International Centre, including Antonio Onorati, Maurizio Paffetti and Claudio Trovato<\/strong>: they were committed to the idea of restoring to people the right to communicate, and to communicate with one another, without intermediaries. But there was still neither a physical location nor a proper archive; there was only the desire to enable people to talk about themselves in a way that suited them. The Mediateca was taking shape.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Slides were the first items to be added to the Mediateca delle Terre. Subsequently, Crocevia decided to launch various communication projects, particularly in Latin America and Africa, so that local communities could rediscover the ability to represent themselves and take ownership of their history. It therefore set out to find people who, in their own countries, were documenting a fragment of their reality and traditions. It was important to the Mediateca\u2019s founders to give full prominence to works produced by local, non-Italian creators, as this was the only way to foster an understanding of other cultures and counter stereotypes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We have thus built up a collection of almost 2,000 audiovisual items, as well as a substantial archive of photographic material, slides, teaching aids, CDs and CD-ROMs, available to anyone interested in exploring the themes addressed by Crocevia and wishing to use them as educational and training resources.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
